I have a good friend who will never give up his season tickets. They’re about 20 rows down from the press box and right on the 50-yard line... that’s just high enough to see a play develop, and low enough to hear the “pop” of a good hit.
Oh... one other thing about the seats, we can get as rowdy as we want. Tell that to the press box boys who have to whisper instead of giving it the old “rise-and-shout.”
The BYU defensive players started with VIM. I loved the way they sprinted out on the field. Just one play in, Cougar defensive back, Bryan Logan intercepted Omar Clayton on the UNLV 41 yard line. Then, the offense stalled with a false-start and two incomplete passes.
To be honest, Heaps looked timid. I turned to my buddy and said, “they need to give him more opportunities to build his confidence.”
Well! That they did. Heaps and company went on a tear for three solid quarters. Mendenhall finally relieved his opponents at 55-0 by subbing in the second and third string for the last quarter of play.
At one point, the stadium was like a tomb. It was the quietest game I have ever attended. Even the Cougarettes had difficulty riling up the fans and that’s saying something for the eight-time NDA champions.
Truly, it was an enjoyable afternoon. What’s more, our friends up north absolutely imploded. They played about as flat-footed and emotionless as they could. The difference between the two teams was eerie.
I thought perchance, that the “Black-Out” had teleported Rice-Eccles and the entire team to Santa Maria, California. And, that one would find giant bean pods in the locker room instead of players.
Well, lets hope that the’ve been replaced by pod-players and that they don’t decide to seek their revenge on our up-and-coming team.
If we play our cards right... Oh! and the bean pods remain in the Yewt locker room, we could see a 7-5 season. I’m not holding my breath, but one can hope can’t he?
